Valentine’s, but make it modern – Middleton Lodge

From Day To Night

This seriously stylish couple held their ceremony in the Fig House and their feast in the Main House at Middleton Lodge. Jess and Ben wanted to create an elegant feel of romance with their daytime flowers, while maintaining a modern sense of edgy style. We kept colours minimal, with lots of fragrant greenery and herbs running along the long tables. The gold vessels and flickering candles really complemented this, and made for a beautifully warm, welcoming and sophisticated space.

If you know me and my floral design, you’ll know I’m always looking for ways to change things up and escape from the norm. For Jess and Ben, the way to do this was all about sculpture and shape. I used dark wiggly twigs (technical term) to create a dramatic ceremony backdrop, interspersing these with textural dried flowers. These sculptural elements were continued in Jess’s bouquet... but more on that later.

It’s time to talk about the marquee and the ‘epic party’ portion of Jess and Ben’s Valentines Day wedding. This was SUCH fun to put together. The couple wanted to really surprise their guests with a romantic festival to take them from day to night. Think giant mirror balls, incredible coloured lighting, balloons, and fun touches galore. I dotted the tables in rich red flowers and draped the beams in greenery and added trailing coloured ribbons to draw the eye up and make people feel surrounded by the party vibes!

Valentines, but make it modern...

We can’t go any further without talking about Jess and Ben and how flipping gorgeous they both looked. Jess’s gown from Halfpenny London was the epitome of contemporary cool. Audrey Hepburn for the 21st century? Yes, yes and triple yes! Her bridal bouquet needed to live up to this level of modern sophistication, and for a Valentine’s Day wedding, we couldn’t really not use roses. I wanted to make sure that every element of this floral design was a cliché free zone, and with its exaggerated shapes and deep red, black and neutral colour scheme, it was striking and gorgeous.

Not to be outdone, Ben looked ace in his classic black tux, and it was time to uplevel the traditional boutonnière with something more modern and a heck of a lot cooler. Enter the pocket meadow! I love creating these miniature floral sculptures for buttonholes. They’re so versatile and always look amazing – why should the guys be left out of the statement floral fun?

My Kind Of Wedding!

I loved working with Jess and Ben, and I hope this modern, creative celebration shows you that fashion forward, contemporary style doesn’t rule out colour, surprise and a showstopping sense of fun. Thanks for letting me be a part of your big day, guys, you’re brilliant!
